Lost Annotation Work workarounds
URL to access this document at https://kami.app/2020-11-15-outage-kb

There are different cases where this could happen due to yesterday’s (2020-11-15) outage:

  1. If you’re a student/teacher, and did work on Kami and the work did not immediately disappear, to recover your work, please keep a window for Kami open in order to save any annotations that are stored locally on from the device you did your work on. It can take up to 30 minutes to flush the offline annotation queue. Afterwards, you should be able to see your annotations.

  1. If you’re a student/teacher, and did see your work immediately disappear, it means your annotations did not save. Our hope is that our users stopped working on those documents the moment they saw their work immediately disappear. This was caused by a bug with our offline mode, and that has since been fixed with the latest update. You can get onto the latest version by going to https://web.kamihq.com/web/update_app.html Once you are redirected back to Kami, it means you’ve successfully updated to the latest version.

  1. If you’re a student/teacher, if you deleted any annotations during the outage, as in, opened the any file during the outage, deleted those annotations, and refreshed your page now that we’re online again, you might still see those deleted annotations. This is a bug that will be fixed in a future update, but we don’t believe this will impact many people.

  1. If you’re a teacher, and seeing your student is turning in blank work, there’s two ways to investigate:
  1. If you’re loading it in Kami: It’s possible that you loaded the document while our servers were offline. That means the latest annotations saved to our servers haven’t been synced to your device’s document yet. It’s also possible that because of point 1, the student hasn’t synced their work up to Kami’s servers yet, so you can’t get onto the latest document.
  2. If you’re loading the file in Google Drive preview, Kami’s annotations will only show up in the preview when it saves to Drive. Because of the outage, it’s highly unlikely that any work was auto-saved back to Google Drive, but you should have a higher chance of seeing your work if you opened that document in Kami.

If none of these workarounds work, please schedule a call with Hengjie to see what we can do to recover your work. Use this link to schedule a call with him: https://calendly.com/hengjie/kami-teacher
